WHY YOU SHOULD PLANT IT
This plant is in re-bloom for the whole month of August, when few other woody plant are showy (barring the invasive Rose of Sharon, of course). Its scent is thrilling and it remains evergreen in the warmest part of the country. While the plant does take some down time after its spring bloom, its glorious late-summer spectacle is worth the wait.
WHERE TO PLANT IT
It will grow in both part sun to full sun, which makes it really useful almost anywhere in a border. It's a shame to crowd such a neat form, so be sure to leave enough space (about 3/4 to 1 meter) around it. Water regularly, especially in the first couple of years. Make sure the soil contains lots of organic matter – mulch with compost, for instance, and well-composted bark in the autumn. If you are out of its zone altogether, put it in a pot for the winter.
WHAT IT OFFERS
This Daphne has one of the longest blooming seasons of all the small shrubs, given its bi-seasonal blooming in spring and then again in August, and its elegant blooms open white, then develop a slight dash of pink. The shrub is evergreen from Zone 6B and up and it's deciduous in colder areas, where it will need to be protected. (It also makes a sensational container plant.) Always make sure it's placed near a seating area or under a window that you tend to open so you can wrap yourself in its wonderful scent.
