Getting There

Lake Superior Provincial Park's Agawa Bay visitor centre is located 90 minutes north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on Highway 17. It takes about an hour to drive from there to the northernmost Coastal Trail access point at Gargantua Bay.

Permits and Logistics

Backcountry camping permits are $10 per person, per night. Contact Lake Superior Provincial Park for information about Coastal Trail logistics. www.lakesuperiorpark.ca; 705-856-2284.

Alternative Plans

It's possible to explore almost all of the Coastal Trail in a series of day hikes. Camp at Lake Superior Provincial Park's Agawa Bay campground ($31.50-$46 per night, www.ontarioparks.com) or book a room at Rock Island Lodge ($103 per night, www.rockislandlodge.ca), a lakeside bed-and-breakfast just south of Wawa.
