Photo tip for Nov. 25: Silhouettes can make for very strong graphic elements in an image. These silhouettes work because of the clean background that allows them to pop.

Photo tip for Nov. 24: What makes this image work is that the subject is in the left third of the photograph giving them room to move through the frame from left to right. Also the other paintings in the background give the viewer more context.

Photo tip for Nov. 23: By having one of the subjects in this image half out of the frame at top, the photographer gives us a sense of motion and suggests there's more happening outside of the frame. The half-subject also adds a sense of balance between the players on right and left.

Photo tip for Nov. 22: By shooting through the flag, the photographer has given the image a clean background with no distracting elements. The picture has multiple levels that work with each other to make a quick read for the viewer.

Photo tip for Nov. 19: Globe reader Chris Evans-Rymes sent us this image titled "Expecting" of his wife in response to our call-out for pictures on the theme of framing. The light from the open refrigerator provides an unexpected twist on this week's theme of a "framed image" while the less-than-ideal quality enhances the sleepy, late night scene that all expectant mothers will recognize. The rest of the image falls into complete darkness which keeps the eye focused on the silhouetted subject.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. Readers can learn more about why the image was chosen and tips about shooting similar pictures at Photo Desk, our new online camera club.

On Fridays, the daily image will be chosen from reader-submitted photos based on the weekly theme. This week's theme is what's outside your door .
