Photo tip for Oct. 18: Using a cheap $16 fish tank and three bags of kitty litter, John Lehmann was able to show the reader one view of two completely different worlds dramatically increasing the picture's visual interest. The fish tank is used to keep the camera dry, however the kitty litter has a two fold purpose, one to give weight to the tank which would float down stream and secondly to secure the camera in place. Lastly once the tank is in place Lehmann stood well away from the river bank so as not to spook the fish this was achieved by using wireless remote to trigger the camera.

Things you will need for a successful shoot:

1) A professional camera or at least a camera with an external remote jack hole

2) Camera remotes such as a set of pocket wizards.

3) Three small bags of kitty litter.

4) A fish tank large enough to hold the items listed above.

Photo tip for Oct. 15: Photo editor David Lucas writes: The first thing we noticed about this image was the warm evening light and how it really brought out the colour in the leaves. The image is a great moment and the shallow depth of field helps focus your attention on the photographer's son as the background falls out of focus.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. Readers can learn more about why the image was chosen and tips about shooting similar pictures at Photo Desk, our new online camera club.

On Fridays, the daily image will be chosen from reader-submitted photos based on the weekly theme. This week's theme is colour.

Last week's theme of Thanksgiving and the reader-submitted photo picked by our staff was "Nico playing in the leaves at Grandma's" taken by Ian Muttoo and uploaded to our Flickr pool.
