Photo tip for Nov. 4: This image is all about graphical elements and colour. The bright red of the shoes leaps off the dull grey sidewalk with the hydrant and suitcase adding slight visual clues to the environment the woman is walking in.
Photo tip for Nov. 3: The photographer composed this image with the shuttle in the lower part of the frame which allows the sky to become dominant in the picture. The wide angle allows the viewer to really see the staging ground for the shuttle.
Photo tip for Nov. 2: The pigeons add a second element that makes the image far more interesting to look at. They add a sense of movement to the image and also serves to focus your eye on the man smoking on the bench by creating a frame.
Photo tip for Nov. 1: Shooting from a low angle helps emphasize the size of it while keeping the background clean. The tourist adds a human element to the image and helps provide some scale.
Photo tip for Oct. 29: Our reader submissions on the theme of "movement" were great. Everyone interpreted the assignment differently and that was evident in the submissions. Globe reader Robin B. Powell really took it to the next level.
His amazing image of star trails taken on a canoe trip on Great Mountain Lake in Ontario's Killarney Provincial Park gives readers a view into the subtle movement of the earth via the night sky. The exposure was 2469 seconds at F4 with an ISO of 100.
The image, titled Astronomy Domine was taken by Robin B. Powell and uploaded to our Flickr pool. It was selected by our staff as one of the best of the reader photos submitted for last week's theme of movement.
Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. Readers can learn more about why the image was chosen and tips about shooting similar pictures at Photo Desk, our new online camera club.
On Fridays, the daily image will be chosen from reader-submitted photos based on the weekly theme. This week's theme is night.
