A young student, skateboard in hand, waits for the city bus for a ride to school while vapour trails from jet traffic decorate the early morning sky in Hamilton, Ontario on October 13, 2010. (Photo by Peter Power/The Globe and Mail)Peter Power/The Globe and Mail

Photo tip for Oct. 14: There are a number of things that make this image stand out. Peter Power used a slow shutter speed to capture the movement of the bus and also exposed for the highlight of the morning sun to create a silhouette of the student. By getting low, he was able to make use of the puddle to get a reflection that adds some light and colour to the bottom of the frame.

Photo tip for Oct. 13: The angle the photographer took this picture at gives it some great perspective. The rows of cars seem to go on forever, partially because of the repeating pattern and the vanishing point that is just out of the frame. The addition of the person also helps add a focus point to the image.

Photo tip for Oct. 12: This image is all about shapes, with the different silhouettes playing off each other. The birds in their cages with just a hint of colour and the hard lines of the shelves give contrast to the softer silhouette of the man in the background.

Photo tip for Oct. 11: Typically you put your photos in frames. Here the photographer uses a handle from a push card to create a frame within the image drawing attention to the children. Using things like doorways, arches or anything you can shoot through works to isolate your subject from the background and move the focus on them.

Photo tip for Oct. 8: Photo editor Dennis Owen writes: What struck me first about this photo is the strong colours and the brackets of lights on what you at first think is the ceiling but upon closer inspection you realize is a reflection on a massive overhead mirror. The rim light on the spectators in the foreground as they watch the performance on stage is slightly eerie and gives the appearance they are mesmerized by what they are seeing.

The image, titled " Later that night at the drive-in," was taken by Ronnie Yip and uploaded to our Flickr pool. It was selected by our staff as one of the best of the reader photos submitted for last week's theme of Light.

Each weekday, our photo editors will select one compelling image for prominent play in the newspaper. Readers can learn more about why the image was chosen and tips about shooting similar pictures at Photo Desk, our new online camera club.

On Fridays, the daily image will be chosen from reader-submitted photos based on the weekly theme. This week's theme is Thanksgiving.
