Four people were sent to hospital after a mishap involving a boat full of extras working on the Jack Black film The Big Year in Tofino, B.C.

On Tuesday night, toward the end of the shooting day, the boat - which was carrying about 25 extras and a marine crew of four - hit a reef or sandbar. "It was a bump," says the film's publicist, Lorraine Jamison. "It was a jolt."

The injuries are all described as minor, although one person was kept in hospital overnight.

"It's standard. If someone's injured on a film set, you want to make sure they're checked out at the hospital to make sure everybody's okay," Jamison says. "Safety's just hugely important."

Jamison says all of the other extras on the boat were back at work Wednesday.

None of the film's stars - Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson - were involved.

The Big Year, based on Mark Obmascik's book The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession, is shooting in the picturesque town on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It's about three bird watchers (Black, Martin and Wilson) who compete to spot the rarest birds in North America during a year-long contest.
