Officials at one of the largest Sikh temples in North America are denouncing a shooting in its parking lot Saturday during a wedding.

Police and ambulance rushed to the scene at Guru Nanak temple in Surrey after shots rang out early afternoon during the ceremony.

RCMP found a man struck by bullets in his upper thigh, but otherwise not in a life-threatening condition.

"As far as we understand, it was a personal dispute that unfortunately found its way into the Gurdwara parking lot," said a release by the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Society.

"This event or the individuals involved have no connection with this Gurdwara and the Gurdwara strongly condemns this and every act of violence."

Witnesses said an argument broke out between two people at the wedding, who are believed to have a long-standing feud.

RCMP called it a targeted shooting and say the suspect is known to them, though he wasn't immediately apprehended.

Violence flared at the same temple in 1997. The disagreement was between members who wanted tables and chairs to be available in the temple dining hall, and others who said it violated traditional Sikh values.

The temple officials pointed out that Saturday's shooting is an isolated incident.

"We as Sevadaars and committee do not bar ... anyone from attending the Gurdwara," the statement said.

"Any reference to past incidents at the Gurdwara linking them to this event or references to politics that took place here or in the Sikh community are grossly inaccurate."

A man who answered the temple's telephone declined to answer any questions.

The statement said people of all countries, backgrounds and religions are welcome at the temple "to heal, uplift and serve."
