Vancouver police have apologized after mistakenly arresting the wrong man during an investigation late Thursday.
One of two city police officers who arrested Yao Wei Wu in a case of mistaken identity has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the outcome of an internal investigation that now involves a team of senior officers.
The probe includes the work of a Cantonese-speaking sergeant to liaise with the Wu family.
Mr. Wu, 44, was beaten up by two plainclothes police officers who came to his home last Thursday night to investigate a report of a domestic dispute, but got the wrong home. Mr. Wu suffered fractures in the bones around an eye as well as bruises to his knees and back.
Police later arrested a man living in the other suite in the house on suspicion of assault after a dispute with his wife, who originally made the 911 call.
Police Chief Jim Chu has apologized for the arrest and injury of Mr. Wu and an earlier statement that he resisted arrest.
The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner is monitoring the ongoing investigation.
