The police-officer brother of B.C.'s healthy-living minister has been charged with assault following a review by an independent special prosecutor.

The charge, arising from allegations that Sergeant George Chong assaulted a 33-year-old male prisoner in the cells of the Victoria police force, was sworn in Victoria provincial court Tuesday. Sgt. Chong is to appear in court on August 4.

The sergeant is the brother of Ida Chong, minister of healthy living and sport.

Mark Jette, the independent special prosecutor, was assigned to the file in June. Under the terms of his mandate, Mr. Jette will conduct the prosecution in the case.
