Edmonton's mayor says it will take three to five years before a new police strategy to reduce violence makes a noticeable change in the city.
Stephen Mandel met with the police chief for 1.5 hours about the plan.
He says everyone needs to work together to make the city a safer place to live.
Chief Rod Knecht says it's impossible to prevent homicides themselves, but he's hoping to come up with more ways to fight crime generally.
Areas to be focused on include drugs and alcohol, weapons, drug trafficking and what he called "social disorder."
There are 33 homicides recorded so far this year — the highest rate anywhere in the country.
