Nunavut's chief justice is asking for more judges to deal with the growing rate of violent crime in the territory.

In a letter to Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, Chief Justice Robert Kilpatrick says Nunavut needs at least two more judges to deal with an accelerating rate of violent crime.

Kilpatrick points to figures that show Nunavut's rate of violent crime was six times the national average in 2006.

He says last year was even worse, with almost one Criminal Code offence laid for every three residents of the territory.

Nunavut has fewer judges than the Northwest Territories or Yukon, despite its higher crime rate.
