City council in Owen Sound, Ont., has been told Bruce Power's plan to ship decommissioned steam generators through the Great Lakes poses no danger to the public or the environment.
However, Ramzi Jammal of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission said Monday night the plan won't be approved until all commission requirements have been satisfied.
Mr. Jammal says Bruce Power's application to send sixteen 100-tonne generators to Sweden to be recycled is incomplete, and stressed he was not defending the plan.
But Mr. Jammal says there would be no danger in the event of an accident, because contamination in each generator is confined to its innermost workings, separated by two inches of steel, and all openings are welded shut and safely sealed.
Dr. Hazel Lynn, the local medical officer of health, has reiterated Mr. Jammal's view that there is no danger to the public from the generators.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners invited Mr. Jammal to the meeting and says his comments have given her some peace of mind about the proposal.
