A girl who Edmonton police allege was HIV-positive and was having unprotected sex without warning her partners will appear in court this week.
The 17-year-old was taken into custody in Edson, Alberta on Saturday.
Investigators issued a news release Sunday stating they'd received numerous calls from people who said they'd seen the 17-year-old girl hitchhiking out of Edmonton.
Police say they received permission from the courts to warn the public about the girl, alleging she posed a significant risk to the community.
The Criminal Code allows for charges of aggravated sexual assault to be laid against someone who is HIV positive and deliberately has unprotected sex without informing their partner.
They say they took the step after receiving complaints from two males.
Police say that since they issued the warning, another complainant has come forward.
The suspect faces two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and police say additional charges are pending as their investigation continues.
She will appear in court on Tuesday.
