A series of forest fires raging out of control in northern Quebec has forced 1,300 people from their homes.

The situation is severe enough that the province has called in backup from across Canada.

Two water bombers from Manitoba have been sent to Quebec.

Quebec's forest fire protection agency counted 57 active fires in the province Thursday, 14 of which were considered cause for concern.

Fires near the Wemotaci native reserve, north of Quebec City, prompted an evacuation.

The Red Cross is helping the Quebec government handle the operation, and is relocating people by bus to the municipality of La Tuque.

Separate fires in Abitibi-Temiscamingue are also burning out of control, but they haven't yet caused anyone to leave their home.

In all, some 27,600 hectares of forest are ablaze.

A spokeswoman for the fire protection agency, Eloise Richard, said it was using all its resources to contain the damage, deploying 800 firefighters, 50 helicopters and 14 water bombers.

But with the service stretched to the limit, it is asking other provinces to send firefighters and equipment to help.

Richard said the fires were likely caused by lightning.
