The Supreme Court of Canada has handed a partial victory to a former Edmonton cop-turned-private-investigator who was charged with extortion and obstruction of justice.

The court has restored Ross Barros's acquittal on one count of extortion, but ordered a new trial on one count of extortion and one of obstruction.

Seven justices supported the decision, with two others offering separate, partial dissents.

Mr. Barros was acquitted on all three charges at trial, but the Alberta Court of Appeal overturned that, ordering a new trial on all counts.

The appeal court ruling was a 2-1 decision, giving Mr. Barros an automatic appeal to the Supreme Court.

The case involved Mr. Barros's efforts to identify a confidential police source in a drug case.
