The Globe and Mail reported that President Ronald Reagan invited new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to a summit meeting at an unspecified date and location, although the U.S. leader would prefer that any talks take place in the United States. Vice-President George Bush carried the proposal to Gorbachev during his visit to Moscow for the funeral of Konstantin Chernenko.

50 YEARS AGO

The Globe and Mail reported that Toronto Transit Commission chairman Charles Watson said he anticipated basic fares would be raised to 15 cents. Cuba's revolutionary government seized three U.S.-owned sugar mills.

100 YEARS AGO

The Globe published more than two columns of advertisements calling for skilled mechanics. "The life history of many men will be decided by these advertisements," The Globe asserted on the front page. "Perhaps one them may set your feet on the ladder of success. Go to pg. 25."
