Halifax's mayor is worried that a federal election will put a $159-million dollar project to build a convention centre in the city at risk.

Peter Kelly agrees with comments by Defence Minister Peter MacKay that a federal election will put decisions on funding for the project on pause.

The developer for the project had set a mid-April deadline for funding commitments from the city, the province and Ottawa.

Kelly says if Ottawa isn't at the table, it raises the possibility that the developer won't be able to keep the same terms for the deal, and that could mean a renegotiation.

So far the province and the city have each committed $56-million to the convention centre in the city's downtown.

Ottawa has been asked to contribute $47-million from the Building Canada Fund.
