Competing local marathons have been granted an extra two weeks to resolve their differences before city hall forces them into open bidding for the right to host Toronto's only marathon.
Supporters of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon and the GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon appeared yesterday at a meeting of the city's public works committee, which decided to give race organizers an extension so they could either merge or agree which marathon would move to the spring.
"The two marathon teams are now in sudden-death overtime," said Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker, chair of the public works committee. If the race organizers can't agree, the city will launch a competitive proposal process.
