Police arrested the owner of an Old Montreal boutique where deadly shootings took place as homicide detectives finished combing through the blood-spattered crime scene Friday.

Police did not immediately identify the suspect, but said a 41-year-old man had been arrested and was accused of violating bail conditions.

Sources said the man arrested was 41-year-old Ducarme Joseph, who owns the store where two men were gunned down and two more were injured the previous day.

Police said the shootings were professionally planned, and said they had theories about a possible motive.

Sources said one theory was that the shootings were linked to the December murder of the son of reputed Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto.

Constable Anie Lemieux said police had already been keeping an eye on the crime scene - the fashion boutique - well before the shooting.

Constable Lemieux said three of the four men were known to police. Friends of the fourth man, who was injured, have told media he was an electrician in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The man arrested Friday, whom a police source identified as Joseph, is expected to appear in court by video conference on Saturday on charges of breaking bail conditions.

Detectives and crime-scene analysts finished working the scene Friday, as Old Montreal returned to normal and orange police barriers were removed from the historic neighbourhood.
