A navy medic who was performing medical examinations for a military recruitment centre has been charged with sexual assault and numerous other counts under the National Defence Act.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service says the charges stem from incidents alleged to have occurred during physicals conducted on behalf of the recruitment centre in London, Ont.

Petty Officer Second Class James Wilks faces two counts of sexual assault under the National Defence Act and the Criminal Code, along with three counts of behaving in a disgraceful manner and four counts of negligent performance of duty.

The military police have asked anyone with information pertinent to their investigation to contact them.

Mr. Wilks is performing administrative duties pending the outcome of the judicial process.

The investigation service's commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Gilles Sansterre, called sexual assault "a serious matter" and promised to thoroughly investigate any allegations against military personnel, civilian defence employees or any other person on military property.
