Save Our Prison Farms protests at a Kingston, Ont. prison continued on the morning of Monday, August, 9, 2010. Posted to Twitter by @elamin88

Nine people were arrested Sunday during a protest at a federal prison in Kingston, Ont., aimed at preventing the closure of the prison farm.

Save Our Prison Farms organizer Andrew McCann says about 500 people were able to block four trucks from entering to load up cattle to be sold at auction.

He says police have promised that no cattle will be moved before 6 a.m. Monday and the group has called for another blockade at the minimum-security prison.

Mr. McCann says the several of the people arrested and charged with mischief Sunday have been released and some will have bail hearings on Monday.

The group served notice of its plans to blockade the prison on July 23 when it staged a protest at the Corrections Canada regional office in Kingston, Ont.

Plans call for about 8,000 chickens and 300 cows to be auctioned off from the Frontenac farm - one of six planned closures of prison farms across Canada.
