A 19-year-old southern Ontario man is back in Canada after being stranded in Cuba for three months following a car accident.

Cody LeCompte's flight arrived at Toronto's airport on Friday night, a day after he got official word he was free to leave the Caribbean nation.

Some family members and friends were on hand waving Canadian flags.

Mr. LeCompte's struggle with Cuban law began when the rental car he was driving was sideswiped by a pickup truck and some of his passengers were injured.

Mr. LeCompte was told that he could not leave the country because accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes under Cuban law.

Last week Cuban police agreed to let the family post bail, on the condition that Mr. LeCompte would return for a trial.

The move came a few days after Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Peter Kent, brought up the case with Cuba's representative in Canada.
