The case of a Nova Scotia man charged with second-degree murder in the death of his mother was delayed Wednesday because of a paperwork error.

Zachary Quinn Brake, who is charged in the death of Tracy Ann Rudderham, appeared briefly in provincial court in Amherst, N.S.

The 18-year-old Mr. Brake had just completed an assessment to see if he was fit to stand trial.

However, Judge Paul Scovil ordered further testing when it was learned that Mr. Brake wasn't examined to see if he could be held criminally responsible for a crime.

The court heard the box ordering that work wasn't ticked off following Mr. Brake's last court appearance.

He's due back in court Dec. 19.

Mr. Brake turned himself in to police on Oct. 26. Shortly afterward, police found Ms. Rudderham's body in the home she shared with her son.

Police have not said how the 37-year-old woman died.
