Police say a homemade device is responsible for the bomb scare that forced the evacuation of 20 homes in London, Ont.

While some 80 people were allowed back in their homes early Tuesday the residence where the explosive device was found remains under investigation.

Const. Amy Phillipo says police are guarding the scene and have seized materials and a homemade device that will be "subject to further forensic examination."

The drama began just before 7 a.m. Monday when police arrived at the home on a medical call and found something suspicious.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital with an undisclosed injury or ailment.

Const. Phillipo would not say if police have been able to speak to the boy, and declined to give further details about the device.

"We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the homemade explosive device," she said.

"We're not getting into further explanations of what the exact homemade explosive device is. It was one homemade explosive device."

Police have said the device wasn't tied to any criminal activity like a drug lab.

Initially just the two residences adjacent to the home on Lisa Court, which has a "For Sale" sign outside and a Christmas wreath on the door, were evacuated.

However, police widened the evacuation zone to several streets after a bomb disposal robot was sent in. All the homes on Lisa Court were then evacuated along with some residences on Sackville Street, Dame Street and Chesley Avenue.

A transit bus was provided as a warm shelter for people evacuated from their homes, and the city had set up an emergency space at a community centre.
