Winnipegger Leanne Freeman, 23, was found on an isolated street in the Port Lands area.

A woman who was found severely injured on an isolated street in Toronto's Port Lands area and later died was a 23-year-old from Winnipeg, police said Tuesday afternoon.

Leanne Freeman was found shortly after 1 a.m. and was taken to hospital, where she died from a gunshot wound, police said. Her death is being treated as a homicide.

She was found lying on Unwin Avenue, near Leslie Street, and police didn't initially know why she was in the industrial area. The call to police cited a collision but the possibility that she was hit by a car was quickly ruled out.

On Tuesday morning, Staff Sergeant Ian Moyer of 55 Division said "we are getting a lot of help from the public." Police are continuing to ask anyone with information about Ms. Freeman to contact them.
