Seven children were injured when their school bus was rear-ended by a tanker truck northwest of Toronto on Thursday, police said.

Two students were transported to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The other children and the bus driver were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

"At this point, it's too early to tell if any charges will be laid or if they are applicable," said Sergeant Barry Malciw of the Halton Regional Police Service.

Peel Regional Paramedic Services described the children's injuries as "leg/back injuries" in an initial tweet. Police said all the children were conscious after the crash.

The school bus was either slowing down or had come to a full stop when the collision occurred around 8 a.m. in Hornby, Sgt. Malciw said.

CP24 broadcast aerial footage from the scene showing the small school bus on the wrong side of the road with the tanker several metres behind it. The rear of the bus showed significant damage, as did the front of the tanker truck. The tanker was carrying home heating fuel, Sgt. Malciw said, adding that the hazardous material did not spill onto the roadway.

Roads were closed in the area as a police reconstruction unit investigated the collision.

The children attend Pineview Public School and Stewarttown Middle School in Halton Hills.
