Police say a 17-year-old boy faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of a 70-year-old man in Halifax on the weekend.

Two women out for a walk on Saturday night found Glenn Francis Oakley injured on the sidewalk of a bridge in the Spryfield district.

He was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The Spryfield boy also faces charges including possession of a weapon and theft.

Police say they believe the murder was a random incident.

An 18-year-old man also remains in custody in relation to the case, but police say a decision on charges has yet to be made.

Meanwhile, four other people face charges including obstructing police in relation to the arrest of the 18-year-old.
