Two men are facing charges in connection with the alleged theft of a vast quantity of money from a Saskatchewan First Nation's treaty land entitlement fund.

RCMP say the charges follow a complaint laid in May 2006 surrounding the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation fund.

Trustees of the money had been alerted by a band lawyer a year earlier that a $3.7-million account had allegedly been emptied over a four-month period before a band election.

Sgt. Laura-Anne McDance with the RCMP's commercial crimes unit says the investigation into the complaint was complex and required a great deal of time.

Melvin Napoleon Merasty and George Kevin Sewap have been charged with theft and fraud over $5,000.
