A 56-year-old woman was injured when a man opened fire in an apartment building in northern Quebec.
Police say a man walked through the halls of the three-storey building Sunday, firing shots before climbing onto the roof and continuing to fire.
The 31-year-old man paced along the roof shooting at people nearby for a short period of time before re-entering the building.
The incident began around 8:50 a.m. when Saguenay police received 911 emergency calls reporting gunfire in Jonquiere, a suburb of Saguenay, located some 220 kilometres north of Quebec City.
When they arrived on the scene, a man was on the roof of the building with a 12-calibre hunting rifle.
Police spokesman Jean Boily said he was shooting in the direction of an individual, but missed.
The man then disappeared off the building's roof.
"When they saw that the police quickly entered the building and found him there unarmed," Const. Boily said.
"He sought refuge in an apartment and that's where the police arrested him."
He was taken into police custody at 9:35 a.m.
The woman was shot in the face in the hallway as she left her apartment when she heard the gunshots.
The seriously injured woman was transported to a hospital in nearby Chicoutimi.
Another man received minor injuries in a struggle prior to the shooting.
Police said the shooter had no obvious relationship to the victims.
"He had no direct relationship with the people he hurt," he said.
"But the individual did live in the building."
Const. Boily said the man is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
