Globe and Mail photographer Charla Jones was recently on her way down Strachan Avenue, crossing the railroad tracks, when she saw these abandoned rusted nail cans.

"I couldn't help but notice the subtle remnants of a time when this part of Toronto was filled with factories and was more of an industrial landscape. Scenes like this are so rare, because gentrification in the area is happening so quickly."

Indeed, just across the street from this scene, developers are rapidly sowing beige row houses and raising glass towers in Liberty Village.

As for this latest city inside of the city, Ms. Jones finds it "boring and stark," but admits that it's probably just her.

"A lot of people seem to like it," she says.
