A 14-year-old boy shot by Winnipeg police has been charged with vehicle theft and other offences.

And police say it is not the first time the teenager has been in trouble for driving, even though he's too young to get a driver's licence.

Constable Jason Michalyshyn says the boy stole a car and, when cornered by police yesterday, drove it at them before an officer fired at him.

The boy was hit by bullet fragments, suffered minor wounds, and has been released from hospital.

He faces several charges including theft, dangerous operation of a vehicle and failure to comply with a sentence.

Const. Michalyshyn says the boy is not on the list of chronic auto thieves who are tracked by justice officials.

But he says the boy has had "extensive" involvement with police before, including property-related charges and a charge of driving a vehicle while under 16 years of age.

Two other boys, who police say were passengers in the car yesterday, are charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
