Police in Guelph, Ont., are conducting an internal probe after a woman who was declared dead turned out to be alive.

On Tuesday afternoon, police were called to the Day's Inn on Gordon Street after a staff member found a woman in her room and thought she was dead.

The first police officers on the scene also determined the woman was dead.

Assuming they were dealing with a crime scene, police locked down the room and didn't allow emergency workers or firefighters to enter.

More than two hours later, forensic investigators found "very, very faint vital signs" and the woman was rushed to hospital.

Police say there were no signs of trauma on the body of the 50-year-old woman, and foul play is not suspected.
