morning buzz

Michael Ignatieff's Montreal policy conference failed to boost his party's support, as a new EKOS poll out this morning finds little for Grits to cheer. The only positive for the Liberals is that support for the Conservative government isn't rising either.

It could get worse for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who is having a rough week in Ottawa thanks to Hillary Clinton and Helena Guergis.

"The leading indicator of confidence in the federal government is down significantly this week, which is not a good harbinger of the future," says EKOS pollster Frank Graves. "Yet it is even a worse poll for the Liberals who are now down firmly in Dion territory, despite the weekend think fest."

The survey, conducted for the CBC, showed 32.2 per cent would vote Conservative - down from 33.3 per cent last week - and 27 per cent support for the Liberals. The Grits had 27.7 per cent support last week heading in to the convention and this continues a seven week slide for Mr. Ignatieff's party.

Support for the NDP is at 16 per cent this week and Green Party support is at 12.7 per cent.

Asked whether the country was moving in the right direction, 41.9 per cent supported the current direction, down 2.3 per cent from the week before.

The survey of 2,162 Canadians was conducted March 24 to 30 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
