It is becoming abundantly clear that Conservatives have problems with tequila. This is not a kooky Chomsky theory but reality.

Years ago former Tory heavyweight cabinet minister John Crosbie sang about the virtues of tequila to Liberal powerhouse MP Sheila Copps. As "Pass the Tequila, Sheila, and lay down and love me again" escaped the Crosbie wind-pipes in 1990, a storm of protest arose about the propriety of his ditty. While he didn't apologize more than a few worms turned in outrage.

It appears the Tory tequila curse has struck again. Recently, Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn had his demon drink seized at an airport. Reportedly the minister wasn't pleased and now the media is in a lather just as it was with Crosbie in 1990. Perhaps someone should crack open the seized Blackburn bottle and pass it around to take the edge of off those covering this pressing national story. At any moment Mexico will be launching a NAFTA challenge against Canada for unfair trade practices related to the importation of tequila.

Take comfort Minister Blackburn, all will eventually be forgiven and the world's order will be rightly restored. In 1991, one year after Crosbie's crooning, as I recall, Sheila Copps (ever the decent sport) signed a bottle of tequila for a celebration of Crosbie's 25 years in politics. Maybe there is a friendly CATSA agent who'll do the same for Blackburn when the time is right.
