Acquaintances of a woman who drowned in Lake Ontario this weekend fled the scene after discovering her body, police say.

Just past 12:30 a.m. Sunday, emergency crews were called to the marina at Ontario Place in Toronto for a reported drowning. A woman, who witnesses say had been drinking and taking drugs, had fallen into the water. She was dead when police arrived on scene.

The woman, 32, was with either friends or family at the time, but when police arrived "everyone took off," according to police spokesman Constable Victor Kwong.

"These were not strangers," Mr. Kwong said.

He said the woman was on a private boat and somehow fell into the water. When her acquaintances realized, they pulled her out of the water and attempted CPR before calling police.

Police said witnesses say she had attended Digital Dreams, an electronic dance music festival, on Saturday.

Police have since tracked down some witnesses but are still looking to speak to anyone who knows what happened. They are awaiting a toxicology report and further investigation before releasing details of the woman's death.

On Sunday, police tape could be seen along piers in the south marina that dock boats up to 24.5 feet in length. An official for the marina would only say that police had been called to the area on Sunday, but would not provide further details.
