Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the shooting death of a man by Toronto police after a brief pursuit early Monday.
The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. at Cherry Street and Commissioners Street in the Port Lands area of the city's waterfront. One officer was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with minor injuries.
Toronto Police began following a car at Leslie Street and Commissioners Street, several blocks east of the collision site, but halted the pursuit soon after, according to the SIU. Reports suggested the driver was going through red lights with his headlights off. Police reportedly set up a roadblock and opened fire when the driver steered his car at them.
Photographs of the scene show a Nissan Sentra with blown out windows that is boxed in between two police cruisers.
The driver has been identified as Wieslaw Duda, 50, of Mississauga. An autopsy will be conducted on Tuesday.
The Special Investigations Unit, which has assigned eight investigators to the case, probes all cases of serious injury, death or sexual assault involving police and civilians.
