A 5-year-old girl is dead and her mother injured after they were hit by a car in a North York crosswalk Friday afternoon, police said.
The pair were crossing Wedgewood Drive, near Yonge Street and Cummer Avenue, around 2:30 p.m. when a Camry sitting at a nearby stop sign accelerated and hit them, police said. The girl ended up under the vehicle and had to be pulled free by people at the scene. Her mother was knocked onto the hood at first, then fell onto the ground and hit her head.
Paramedics took the girl to the Hospital for Sick Children; her mother, despite her own injuries, came to the hospital as well to be with her daughter. The girl died shortly before 4 p.m.
So far, no charges have been laid against the driver of the car, who police say is a woman in her late 20s. The exact cause of the crash has not been determined.
"Unfortunately, in this day and age, sometimes we have people who don't see everything that they should," said Sergeant Tim Burrows of Toronto police's traffic division.
The name of the girl has not been released.
