Motorists commuting through Markham are urged to avoid Bayview Avenue, north of Steeles Avenue East because of a large sinkhole in the road.
Traffic in both directions has been diverted between Laureleaf Road and Proctor Avenue.
A watermain break is suspected to be the cause of the hole, said Michael Kemp, a York Region spokesman.
The problem could take several days to repair.
