A two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Forest Hill has left an 85-year-old man dead and six others in hospital.

The fire broke out at about 6:35 a.m. on the seventh floor of a 10-storey apartment building at 10 Shallmar Blvd., Toronto Fire Captain David Eckerman said. It was extinguished less than half an hour later.

"At this time, we don't believe it is suspicious," Capt. Eckerman said.

Many residents fled the building and at least six residents were taken to Sunnybrook Hospital because of smoke inhalation, including a 74-year-old woman who lived in the same unit as the man who died.

At least 13 trucks were called on scene and the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified, Capt. Eckerman said.

More to come.
