A man was arrested after trying to carry suspicious materials through security at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Tuesday.

Peel Regional Police said the man, who was travelling to the United States, was later released without charge.

The man had some kind of "metal stuff" in his shoes, said Sergeant Kevin Lindegaard. CBC News reported he had batteries in one shoe and shrapnel in the other, possibly in an effort to appear taller.

Sgt. Kindegaard said the man, who is neither from Canada nor the U.S., was detained around 9 a.m. ET in the security screening area of Terminal 1.

Scott Armstrong, a spokesman with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, would say only that an incident happened at the airport on Tuesday morning.

"There was a police call this morning, police attended and took over the investigation," he said.
