An altercation inside a Scarborough sports bar early Monday has left a man in his late 30s dead of gunshot wounds, pushing the city's homicide tally so far this year to 17.

Gunfire erupted inside G's Chill and Grill Sports Bar at around 2:30 a.m., when the victim was shot several times. When paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name was not released but a police source identified him as Clifenton Ford, 38.

Reports said Mr. Ford had fathered 10 children with at least six partners and was not a regular visitor to the bar, located on a small strip plaza on Eglinton Avenue, just east of Midland Avenue.

Mourners and onlookers gathered outside the bar, where homicide detectives were examining evidence.

About two dozen patrons were inside when the shooting took place, police said.
