A police foot chase near York University has left one man clinging to life in hospital and spurred the province's Special Investigations Unit to investigate.

An altercation took place at Founders Road and Steeles Avenue near York University after police pulled a vehicle over at about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday evening, CP24 reports.

Two people exited that vehicle and a man was later taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The SIU is a civilian agency called in to investigate incidents involving police and the public that result in injury, sexual assault, serious harm or death.

It did not release any information about the incident Wednesday.
