One teacher and three students have suffered minor injuries after a chemical explosion during a science experiment at a school in North York.

Capt. Mike Strapko says the incident took place around 3 p.m. were called at around 3 p.m. after reports of an explosion on Royal Crown Academic School on Bayview Ave.

The class was filled with 17 students.

Toronto Police spokesman Const. David Hopkinson confirmed that there was a chemical explosion at the private school and that emergency services were called.

Strapko said it was part of the science demonstration involved putting drain cleaner into an empty pop bottle with some water. He said the bottle ruptured during the experiment and its contents including corrosive sodium hydroxide were splashed over two girls, one boy and one teacher.

The injured were treated in the school's eye wash station and cleaned up the fallout before fire service arrived. The teacher then drove the students to a hospital where they were all treated for minor injuries.

The students and teachers are being treated for their injuries on legs and face at North York Hospital. Hopkinson said the injured arrived at the North York hospital and were not taken there by emergency crews but that, "they just showed up at North York hospital."

Ontario's Ministry of Labour spokesperson, William Lin has said that an inspector as dispatched to the scene. "We'll be looking into whether there were any health and safety violations. or what led to this incident."
