Three Toronto police detectives are facing assault charges after an arrest last month left a man with broken ribs.
Detective Constables Jason Davis and Keith Osborne and Detective Brian Kay are each facing one count of assault causing bodily harm.
The charges were filed by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, the agency which deals with fatalities and serious injuries involving police.
In a statement, the SIU said its director, Ian Scott, had "has reasonable grounds to believe that three officers with the Toronto Police Service (TPS) committed a criminal offence."
The three were involved in the June 4 arrest of 26-year-old Stalin Kiprotich, who later had to be taken to hospital because he had three broken ribs.
Mr. Kiprotich was arrested around 8:30 p.m. near Kipling Avenue and Finch Avenue West.
There was "an interaction between the officers and Mr. Kiprotich," the SIU said. After he was taken to a cell, he complained about having chest pains and was taken to hospital.
The three officers are to appear at the Finch courthouse Oct. 9.
