A Toronto police officer has been rushed to hospital by ambulance after the cruiser he was driving collided  head-on with a civilian vehicle near a busy intersection in the city's east end.

Police received a report of a crash near the intersection of Midland Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday, said Constable Wendy Drummond, spokeswoman with the Toronto Police Service.

One of the two vehicles involved in the crash was a police patrol car, Constable Drummond said.

The officer was travelling southbound on Midland Avenue, and was responding to a call. The patrol car and a vehicle travelling north on Midland Avenue collided near Lawrence Avenue East.

The officer was briefly pinned in his vehicle, and the 57-year-old woman driving the other vehicle was bleeding. Both the officer and the woman were conscious and breathing.

An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene but was stood down. The officer and the woman were taken to Sunnybrook Health Services Centre for treatment. The officer has a fractured and dislocated pelvis, and the woman has a fractured right ankle.
