Toronto police were looking for a newborn baby Monday after a woman claimed to have given birth in a yard or field.

A woman in her 20s told police it happened Monday afternoon as she was fleeing an assailant in east-end Toronto.

The woman ran into a restaurant, saying she had just given birth. She was taken to a hospital but could not tell police where she had the baby.

A police dog tracked the woman's route from her home to the restaurant but did not find a newborn or any evidence of a birth.

Police said there was a domestic dispute, and that the woman was not being co-operative.

Doctors said it was possible the woman could have given birth, so police were continuing to search Monday evening.
