A Toronto woman who left her badly scalded child for two hours while she went shopping for a CD has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Court heard Melissa Alexander's son Miguel had burns on 40 per cent of his body when she left him with his three-year-old brother and went to the mall.

Ms. Alexander insisted 19-month-old Miguel pulled a bowl of hot water onto himself, but doctors said the injuries were consistent with Alexander immersing the boy in hot water.

The court heard the burns were so bad, a layer of skin peeled off from below his shoulders to the soles of his feet.

Ms. Alexander lied to the boy's father about the injuries, saying they weren't serious and that she dressed them with ointment and gauze.

She will be sentenced in April.
