York Regional police have selected a local for the top job.

Eric Jolliffe, a decorated 29-year veteran of the force, will take over from retiring Chief Armand La Barge on Dec. 13.

Mr. Jolliffe, 54, grew up in Thornhill and began his career as a police officer in Edmonton in 1979. He returned home to take a job with the York force in 1981 and has spent the rest of his career working his way up through the force.

He worked in several jobs across the organization, including as a front-line patrol officer, investigator and a planner, before taking command of 5 District in Markham in 1997. He became a deputy chief in 2002.

Mr. Jolliffe has won a series of awards, including a medal on the Queen's golden jubilee for outstanding service to his community and country.
