Robert Kennedy Jr. has filed for divorce from his wife of 16 years, a New York newspaper is reporting.
The son of former Democratic senator Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former president John F. Kennedy filed divorce papers May 12 - three days before his wife was charged with drunk driving, The Journal News of the Lower Hudson Valley reported Tuesday.
Mary Kennedy was arrested May 15 near the couple's home after police said she was driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.11. The legal limit is 0.08 in New York state.
Mr. Kennedy also filed the papers the day before Bedford, N.Y. police visited the Kennedy home for a domestic dispute where he claimed Ms. Kennedy was drunk. The visit was one of many to the family's home in recent years, the newspaper said, citing police incident reports.
The newspaper said details about the grounds for the filing were not available.
Mr. Kennedy is a noted environmentalist and law professor at New York's Pace University. The couple has four children. He had two other children from a previous marriage,
The divorce will be Mr. Kennedy's second if it is finalized.
